Iscar says its BallPlus family has been aptly named due to the improved clamping mechanism and expanded application options.

Similar to the company’s Multi-Master family, the product is a multifunction system comprised of cylindrical and conical shank options and five various milling inserts. Each shank has the capability to carry different milling inserts. Clamping and indexing milling heads can be done while the tool remains clamped on the machine. Therefore no setup time is necessary after indexing, the company says.

A customized pocket design is said to enable firm insert clamping and edge positioning accuracy, virtually eliminating insert pullout problems. The V-shaped insert is positioned against two contact surfaces to promote accuracy. Tightening the screw pulls the insert backwards into the V-shaped slot, which, according to the company, ensures clamping under high machining forces.

All of the inserts have two cutting edges (fully effective), with a ground chipformer for high feeds and low cutting forces. The inserts are available in IC908 grade, which can be used for numerous application and material options.

Five insert geometries—HBR and HBF (220 degrees), HCR, HCD, HCC HTR—are offered to perform operations such as profiling, steep profiling, undercutting, cavity profiling, shouldering, roughing, finishing, chamfering, countersinking, slotting and drilling.
