UnionChemnitz, in cooperation with its sister company KPM, has designed the PCR 160, a ram-type horizontal boring mill (HBM). The company says this is the first hydrostatic HBM to be built in the United States. The floor-type HBM features a 6.4" (162-mm) spindle diameter and a complete hydrostatic guidance system. According to the company, the hydrostatic guidance of both the column and the ram promote precision and minimal wear on the machine.
The HBM is designed for five-sided machining of medium-size to large and heavy workpieces and can be equipped with an X axis of 138" (3,500 mm) and a Y axis of 157" (4,000 mm).
The machine’s rotary and traversing table has a length of 98" (2,500 mm) and a width of 79" (2,000 mm) to handle workpiece weights of 20 tons. The machine’s welded steel bed absorbs vibrations, and the strongly-ribbed column promotes precision when performing heavy-duty machining tasks, the company says. The HBM compensates for spindle and ram droop as well as column tilt to make it suitable for precise finishing tasks. The table traverses as deep as 59" (1,500 mm) in the V axis (table traverse). The B axis of the table can be adjusted in 0.001-degree steps, enabling precise positioning of the workpiece.
The W axis (boring spindle) and Z axis (ram) of the product have a combined length of 87" (2,200 mm), enabling machining operations deep within workpieces. The HBM is available with a Heidenhain, FANUC or Siemens CNC.
