Mazak’s Mega Turn 900M vertical turning center (VTL) is designed to combine turning and secondary machining operations for efficient processing of large cast iron and steel workpieces common to the construction, industrial and jet engine manufacturing sectors. The machine accommodates workpieces as large as 36.2" × 31.5" and as heavy as 6,624 lbs (including chuck). For heavy-duty machining, the rigid 40-hp, 1,250-rpm integrated main drive motor/spindle generates 2,696 foot-pounds of torque.
According to Mazak, the machine’s MX hybrid roller guide system promotes long-term accuracy. The way system is said to reduce vibration, extend tool life, handle higher load capacities and eliminate tramp oil in the coolant by applying a greener, grease-based lubrication system.
The machine is also equipped with Mazak’s Superflow coolant system, which supplies coolant directly to the cutting edge, creating smaller chips and efficiently evacuating them from the cut. The reduced heat and greater thermal stability provided by the system is said to improve cutting action and surface speeds.
A 12-position drum turret provides rapid tool indexing. The turret is rigidly clamped by 16.7 tons of force on a 12.99" high-index coupling, which allows for intermittent cutting. The machine delivers a rotary tool spindle speed of 4,000 rpm and 70.2 foot-pounds of torque.
When workpiece applications require two machining operations, Mazak offers the Mega Turn 900M in both left- and right-hand spindle orientations, enabling shops to pair two machines together in a compact cell.
The machine is equipped with the Mazatrol SmoothG CNC and its suite of Smooth Technology software. The control’s programming, performance and monitoring functions, as well as the ability to use both EIA/ISO and conversational programming, are said to promote speed and accuracy in complex part production.
