The iLock fixturing system from Sandvik Coromant is designed to keep tools from pulling out during milling in ISO S materials, which are commonly used in expensive aerospace frame components. According to the company, the axial forces created when machining these materials with a solid-carbide end mill put very high demands on the clamping mechanism. In some situations, the company says the tool can pull out from the chuck despite the chuck’s high clamping force.
The iLock system is designed to solve this problem by securing the end mill without interfering with the runout precision of shrink-fit toolholders. Helical grooves are ground into the shank of the tool, and pin drivers mounted in the chuck prevent the tool from being pulled out of the holder during extreme machining conditions.
