Norton Abrasives has introduced a new line of Norton/Merit flap discs and fiber discs. Engineered for applications ranging from stock removal to blending, the flap discs are available in Type 27 and Type 29 shapes with fiberglass, plastic and aluminum backing plates. All fiber discs feature a full resin bond system with heavy-duty fiber backing for increased strength, durability and tear resistance.
 
The products are organized into tiers according to their performance and price levels, the company says. The top tier includes the SG Blaze Plus flap discs and the SG Blaze F980 fiber discs. The flap discs feature ceramic alumina abrasives and provide long life in stainless steel, titanium and super alloys, the company says. A supersize grinding aid is said to produce a cool, fast cutting rate. The flap discs also feature a lightweight, fiberglass back for strength and vibration absorption. The F980 fiber discs’ improved ceramic grain with self-lubricating supersize treatment and heavy-fiber backing creates better finish and long life on tough applications.
 
The middle tier includes the BlueFire flap discs and BlueFire F826 fiber discs. The flap discs feature zirconia alumina plus abrasives for an increased cutting rate. The company says the products last longer than conventional zirconia products in carbon steel and weld, and a semi-open coat retards loading on aluminum. The F826 fiber discs feature an improved blend of custom ceramic alumina and zirconia alumina abrasive. This provides fast, aggressive cutting and enables the disc to self-sharpen with use, the company says.
 

Featuring an engineered blend of two high-performance zirconia products, cotton and polyester flaps, Merit Metal flap discs are designed for fast cutting rates, long life and wear resistance. They provide a good starting specification when price is the primary consideration, the company says. Likewise, Merit Metal fiber discs offer a starting specification for all metals.
