VMC For Precise Mold, Die Work
The SMS SMV-40 series of VMCs from GBI Cincinnati is said to be ideal for ultra-precise mold and die work as well as mixed-volume, short-run operations. It can also be used for dedicated high-volume applications. With X-, Y- and Z-axis travels of 1,000, 520 and 505 mm, respectively, the VMC combines high-performance milling and large machining capacity within a footprint of 2,800 × 2,185 × 3,000 mm.

With X-, Y- and Z-axis travels of 1,000, 520 and 505 mm, respectively, the VMC combines high-performance milling and large machining capacity within a footprint of 2,800 × 2,185 × 3,000 mm. The 1,150- × 520-mm table has a maximum table load of 500 kg, and five table T slots are standard.
Rapid traverse rates are 60 m/min. in the X and Z axes and 30 m/min. in the Y axis. Maximum acceleration of the three axes is as fast as 1G. Ballscrews in all three axes are pretensioned to increase accuracy.
An arm-type, dual, servo-driven ATC changes tools in 1 sec. With a 24-tool capacity, the ATC can accommodate a tool weight of 8 kg, length of 300 mm and a diameter of 80 mm.
The VMC includes versatile high-speed, linear guideways in the X and Y axes and box ways in the Z axis. Positioning accuracy is 8 µm. A high-torque, 18.5-kw, Fanuc spindle motor with direct drive permits full horsepower at low spindle speeds. The 40-taper spindle delivers 50 to 12,000 rpm with semi-ceramic bearings to minimize heat. The headstock has been specifically designed to provide rigidity and precision cutting.Â
