The Wasino A-18S compact turning center from DMG MORI features a turret with 18 tool stations and multitasking capability. The machine’s X-, Y- and Z-axis travels measure 180 × 350 × 100 mm. The combination of the long Y-axis travel and a milling unit that can be mounted in any tool station enables highly efficient machining of round or irregularly-shaped workpieces. The company says the A-18S turning center supports process integration and is well-suited to automotive part applications, which in general need to be machined in several separate processes and on different types of machines.
For stable dimensional accuracy over the long term, the turning center’s stainless steel cover protects the chute, minimizing temperature changes in the bed caused by chips and coolant. The horizontal, single-piece, scraped cast iron slideways provide good vibration damping and resistance to chatter. The minimum distance between the axis travel reference guide and the spindle helps minimize heat effects. The ballscrew support bearing is placed as close to the spindle as possible to suppress thermal displacement; a reliable pre-tension structure is also employed to ensure high precision. These features contribute to the turning center’s dimensional accuracy of 4 microns from a cold start and circularity of 0.8 microns.
A variety of loading and stocking systems are available to promote production and support automation setups, including gantry loaders, conveyors for material loading/unloading, one- and two-axis palletizers, and rotary stockers. Peripheral options include part catchers, external measuring units and tool setters, among others.
