Updated HMC Optimizes Performance for Heavy Parts Production

Mazak has redesigned its HCN-5000/50 horizontal machining center to include the Smooth Technology platform and Mazatrol SmoothG CNC, augmenting productivity and performance in heavy-parts production. Smooth Technology applies to a number of areas of part production, from programming to metal removal to data collection. Optimized CNC performance and new hardware such as high-speed servo systems also contribute to improved machine performance.
The Mazatrol SmoothG CNC eases program generation for processing complex parts through off-centerline machining as well as angled drilling, milling and tapping. The CNC also provides a series of advanced programming features and functions that ensure high-speed, high-accuracy machining performance, the company says.
The HMC uses an integrated spindle/motor headstock design that minimizes vibration and heat generation when operating at a maximum torque of 159 foot-pounds. The headstock also offers part-processing flexibility and a reduction in non-cut times via its high-speed, high-accuracy positioning capabilities. A CAT-50, 10,000-rpm spindle promotes high metal removal in a variety of workpiece materials, from steels to nonferrous metals.
The machine provides fast, precise axis positioning, even at high feed rates, the company says. Axis travels measure 28.7" for X and Y and 29.13" for Z, with a rapid traverse speed of 2,362 ipm per axis at an acceleration of 0.8 G.
The machine’s automatic toolchanger (ATC) provides storage for 120 tools with a maximum diameter capacity of 3.74". The cam-driven ATC also contributes to reduced non-cut times with 2.7-sec. chip-to-chip toolchange cycles.
Featuring a 19.7-in2 pallet, the HCN-5000/50 can accommodate workpieces as large as 31.5" in diameter and 39.4" high, and weighing as much as 1,540 lbs. Its direct-drive rotary table rotates 90 degrees in 0.9 sec. and features a 0.001-degree minimum step for precise four-axis indexing and machining. A two-pallet changer enables an operator to load and unload parts on one pallet while the second is active inside the machine. The two-pallet changer also makes it possible for the machine to integrate with Mazak’s modular Pallech system for continuous, high-volume parts production.
